The Second Gate in Print?

Posted in Grumblings on September 23, 2010 by chemiclord

This is a question that has come up a couple times, and I figure now is as good of a time to address it.

“Will this book ever be in print?”

The short answer is; not likely.

The longer answer is that I have this obnoxious tendency to not be inclined to sell the copyright to any of my intellectual property.  As I mentioned a few months back, selling the copyright is pretty much a requirement in order to get published nowadays.  Every discussion I have with a publisher goes like this:

“So, how much of an advance would you like?  We’ll have the contract to sign over the copyright in 4-6 days.”

“None.  I have no interest in selling the copyright.  I’ll give you exclusive publishing rights, but that’s as far as I’ll go…”

*click*

“Hello?”

As for self-publishing, I’ve tried that, and it’s a load of bunk.  The prices are obscene (who wants to pay $25 for a softcover of this?  Show of hands!) and the self-publishing option requires an upfront investment that loses money before you even have a chance to make any.  That wouldn’t inherently be such a big deal… except that I really don’t have the money to front at the moment.

So, that’s the deal.  You likely won’t see this in print, barring some sort of minor miracle.  *shrug*

The Second Gate: Complete

Posted in Updates on September 12, 2010 by chemiclord

As per reader demand, The Second Gate has been put into expedited completion, the entirety of which can now be read here.

It’s a bit of a catharsis for me; this was a project ten years and fourteen revisions in the making.  Hopefully future books in the series don’t take nearly as long.

Seriously, I wouldn’t live to see the end of it.

So, what happens now?  Well, it’s going to be a while before I get Book Two; The Endtimer’s Legacy, in the works… got a few other projects on my plate, one of which should be posted shortly, another of which one will probably not hear anything about until next year at the earliest.

As for all the readers (who as I understand, have become a large handful as opposed to a small one), if you like what you’ve read, spread the word.  Tell your friends, tell people who you think would like it.  Another way you can help is visit The Second Gate’s listing on the Web Fiction Guide (link here).  Rate it or review it (or both); the more you do, the more the word spreads.

Until next time, happy reading.  I hope to be back soon with more for your eager eyes.

Second Gate: Chapter Twenty-Eight

Posted in Updates on September 6, 2010 by chemiclord

Ubeks are a rather interesting species to try and figure out.

The common perception among the Galactic Alliance is that they are unintelligent barbaric brutes that are barely capable of serving the galactic society beyond being intimidating security guards or low ranking peacekeepers.

The truth is, of course, much more complex than that.  Ubeks can be profoundly intelligent, and usually are.  It’s just that their intellectual strengths tend not to be the ones that are preferred by “sophisticated” society.

Let’s put it this way; you probably don’t want to try and discuss Post-Schism Interpretive Erani Art or the merits of Militant Secularism within Arcadian culture with an Ubek… but if you’re trying to figure out how to break the siege and blockade of your homeworld with a tenth of the resources and vastly inferior technology, having an Ubek over your shoulder to make those decisions would be a very good thing.

Find out more about what makes our big, varying blue neighbors tick in Chapter Twenty-Eight.

“Oops, I was wrong!”

Posted in Grumblings on August 30, 2010 by chemiclord

So, once I made my intentions to post the entirety of The Second Gate, my editor kinda gave me a >_> and a <_<, and said “Perhaps we should give this one more look just to make sure everything is all as you would want it.”

To be fair, this is my fault.  Perhaps I could have told him I was planning to go final cut.  I suppose that would have been courteous.

Weekly updates will continue until the final cut is ready; some earlier chapters are going to get some love too, in the form of extra content and perhaps some more elaboration as to how the stuff in the Gate Universe works.

Sorry if I got all your hopes up… we’ll be burning the midnight oil to get this ready for ya; estimated 2 to 3 weeks.

Second Gate: Chapter Twenty-Seven

Posted in Updates on August 30, 2010 by chemiclord

Due to the shaky nature of my connection today, I’m playing it safe and giving all ten of you an early update.  Here is Chapter Twenty-Seven.

In other news, I’ve gotten some feedback as to how to proceed, and it looks like the “I want it all!” crowd has it.  Within the next few days, I should start posting the remainder of the Second Gate for all you impatient type peoples!

Oh, I kid.  I’m glad you all like it so much you all want the rest right away.  I’m glad to oblige.

Second Gate: The Upcoming Chapters

Posted in Grumblings on August 24, 2010 by chemiclord

Well, I have good news.

The completed and edited entirety of The Second Gate is in my hands.  That means, if I felt so inclined, I could upload and publish everything to the end, within a couple of hours.

But I know some people have gotten accustomed to the chapter by chapter break that I’ve been going with.

So, I’d like some feedback.  Do you want it all, or would you rather keep the nice chunks that I’ve been delivering so far?  I’m fine with either, to be honest.

E-mail me; comment; word’ll get back to me.

Second Gate: Chapter Twenty-Six

Posted in Updates on August 23, 2010 by chemiclord

So, here’s Chapter Twenty-Six.

I think I failed all my readers again.  Julianne and Justin don’t always see eye to eye.  In fact, they rarely do.  Yet, somehow, they don’t have a horrible, failing marriage that is destined to end in drama and a broken family.  How can I do such silly things?

Meanwhile, I promise Timothy isn’t trying to be a catastrophic jackass.  It just comes naturally.  He actually thinks he’s doing what’s best.  Maybe he is; but that doesn’t mean anyone else has to like it… even himself.

Second Gate: Chapter Twenty-Five

Posted in Updates on August 16, 2010 by chemiclord

So, uh… oops.  Timothy accidentally Rumil’s respect.  Way to break it, hero.

Find out how Timothy managed to step in it, just what the hell was so damned scary to the Erani sects that they chopped out almost a half of a prophet’s words, how Dewin can manage to become even more sanctimoniously obnoxious, and more in Chapter Twenty-Five.

Man, that sounded like a really bad TVtropes chop up made by a Hollywood preview writer.  God, I hope that’s not my future.

Hollywood writers get boned hard.

Re: Chapter Twelve of The Second Gate

I have been informed that the viewing of this particular chapter can be hit or miss (sometimes it loads, sometimes it behaves like it is corrupted).  Deleting and reuping said file hasn’t helped, nor has making a new .pdf from my base document and uploading that.

For some reason, WordPress just does not like this chapter.  If you are one of the people it is misbehaving towards, please, feel free to send me an e-mail at chemiclord@gmail.com, and I can send you the chapter for viewing directly.

Thank you for understanding.

Second Gate: Chapter Twenty-Four

Posted in Updates on August 9, 2010 by chemiclord

Hey!  It’s the titular object at long last!

Dun dun DUNH!

Read more about it, as well as something about Rumil (but what exactly,  I wonder), as well as a different side to Timothy that he rarely ever shows in Chapter Twenty-Four.  Could the amore be… reciprocated?  They can do that in fiction?

Wait, could I be doing it all wrong?  Damn it, I need to start adding all sorts of throwaway characters to get in the middle of this budding relationship!  This sort of development between two characters can’t be allowed to happen.  Poorly injected and contrived drama is the way these sort of things have to go!

I got it!  Justin discovers he is actually Julianne’s brother!  He can’t possibly remain married to… wait no… that actually hasn’t stopped Erani noble families in the past.

What, did you think Timothy was joking that arranged marriages have been closer than third cousins?

I guess you’re all just gonna have to put up with a realistic relationship blooming between two people.  Not that there won’t be issues… but it’s actually going to, ya know, make sense and feel like something completely unlike Days of our Lives.

Somewhere, a Twilight fan is crying, and doesn’t know why.  I mean, come on… why would a Twilight fan be reading this piece of drivel?

I’m sorry; I think I hath failed you all again.
